Pharrell & Nile Rodgers "Get Lucky" With Daft Punk

Scene from "Get Lucky" video with Pharrell & Nile Rodgers
Fans of genius French House Duo Daft Punk are used to their brilliance from 2001's "One more time" made even more popular with the song's manga anime style video and the robot themed "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger"  famously sampled by Kanye West.

Their latest single "Get Lucky" off their fourth album titled "Random Access Memories" features vocals by Pharrell Williams and was co-written by legendary producer/guitarist Nile Rodgers who also played rhythm guitar on the track. For the uninitiated, Rodgers has been responsible for producing loads of hits since the 1970's with his band Chic, Diana Ross's masterpieces "I'm coming out" and "Upside down" as well as Madonna's signature tracks "Like a virgin" and "Material girl" etc. Pharrell allegedly got involved with the track by meeting both "Daft Punk" members Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter at one of Madonna's parties and practically begging to be given a role, even if it was just to "play the tambourine".

Daft Punk
Combine Daft Punk, with Rodgers and Pharrell and you have a modern electronic funk (I'm trying hard not to use the word "disco") classic. The start of the track immediately transports you to a different time and you almost think its the opening of Sister Sledge's "We are family" or Diana Ross's "Upside down". Pharrell Williams oils the engine of this remarkable beat with the opening lyrics - "like the legend of the phoenix...".By time he gets to the uplifting bridge - "we've come too far to give up who we are" you almost think you've heard it before and probably sing along to the hook - "we're up all night to get lucky". It's in the perfect mould of the classics it was designed to emulate.

It's drawn comparisons to the Bruno Mars single "Treasure" also performed in tribute to the unforgettable era of 1970's disco and is miles ahead of same largely due to the presence of one of the architects of disco. It may (should in my opinion) earn Daft Punk a grammy. Let's wait and see. "70's Philes" like this writer would welcome it in the hope it encourages others to continue the trend.

Meanwhile, enjoy the video and (tongue in cheek) "Get Lucky"
